Amalgamated Society of Tailors and Tailoresses

Administrative history: The Amalgamated Society of Journeymen Tailors was formed in 1868 from an amalgamation between the Manchester Society of Tailors and the London Operative Tailors Protective Association and several other unions. In 1894 it changed its name to the Amalgamated Society of Tailors. In 1900 a female section was set up and the union changed its name to the Amalgamated Society of Tailors and Tailoresses. Formed in Manchester in 1866 as the Amalgamated Society of Tailors, the union became the Amalgamated Society of Tailors and Tailoresses in 1906. It absorbed a number of local societies of tailors before merging with the Tailors and Garment Workers' Union in 1932 to form the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers.
