Gloria Jean Skurzynski is recipient of the Golden Kite Honor Book nonfiction award (1978), the Horn Book Honor Book award (1979), Booklist Reviewer's Choice Award (1979, 1982), Best Books for Young Adults (1981), a Golden Kite Award for fiction (1983), the Utah Children's Choice Book Award (1984), Western Writers of America Golden Spur Award (1985), American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award (1992), and many others.

Gloria Skurzynski was born July 6, 1930, in Duquesne, PA. She became a writer, with many awards and honors for her work. She dropped out of college, married, and had a family; she did not begin writing until the last of her five daughters had begun attending school. Many of her books deal with historical topics, or with high-tech topics, two of her interests. She also wrote a series of mysteries for teens, set in various national parks and preserves.
