Samuel, John, (1817- ca. 1911)
Biographical notes:
Labor economist, historian, and teacher, who investigated the Americanization of immigrant workers, the steel strike of 1919, and the labor movement and cooperatives in France between 1918-1929, and who served as senior research associate for the Twentieth Century Fund from 1934-1945. From 1935-1940 Saposs was chief economist for the National Labor Relations Board, a position he was forced to resign because of House Un-American Activities Committee accusations that he was a Communist, though he served other government agencies from 1940 to 1954.
