Biographical notes:

Sir John Harold Clapham (1873-1946), historian, was born at Broughton, Salford, Lancashire, on 13 September 1873. He attended the Leys School, then King's College, Cambridge, where he was a Fellow, 1898-1904. He was Professor of Economics at Leeds, 1902-1908. Clapham was elected a Fellow of King's for a second time in 1908, and was tutor, 1913-1928, and Vice-Provost, 1933-1943. He was Professor of Economic History at the university, 1928-1938, and was knighted in 1943. He died while travelling by train from London to Cambridge on 29 March 1946.
