Kornberg was Chief of Enzymes and Metabolics at the National Institute of Health from 1947 to 1953, Chief of the Department of Microbiology at the Washington University School of Medicine from 1953 to 1959 and Chairman of Stanford's Department of Biochemistry from 1959 to 1969. In 1959, Kornberg received a Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology for pioneering the synthesis of DNA in the laboratory.
