Ralph W. Cummings (1911-2001) was born in Reidsville, North Carolina. He was the head of the Department of Agronomy at North Carolina State University from 1942 until 1947. He held a number of administrative positions for the University over the scope of his career, as well as working in research and leadership positions for a number of national and international organizations concerned with world agriculture and agricultural education and research.
