c 1707 merchant in Lisbon; 1719 travelled to Bombay as a freemerchant; 1720-1721 envoy to Goa; 1721 appointed to the Bombay council; 1722 investigator at Surat; 1724-1726 chief of the British settlement at Mocha; 1726 second in council at Bombay; 1729-1734 president and governor of Bombay; 1736 knighthood; 1737 MP for Tregony borough, died.
