H.R. MacMillan began his career in the forest industry as B.C.'s first chief forester in 1912. In 1919 he established his own company, H.R. MacMillan Export Co. Ltd. This was expanded in the 1950s to become the forestry giant, MacMillan Bloedel. MacMillan was very active in the community and provided funding and support for University of British Columbia forestry and fishing programs.

Noted lumberman and philanthropist H.R. MacMillan became Chief Forester for British Columbia in 1912. During his tenure in the position he created the B.C. Forest Service. Soon after World War I, he established the H.R. MacMillan Export Company. In 1951 the company merged with Bloedel, Stewart and Welch to form MacMillan and Bloedel, Ltd. Even after stepping down as chairman of the company, MacMillan remained very active in the business.
