George Edmund de Schweinitz was a prominent ophthalmologist, born in Philadelphia on October 26th, 1858. He worked and lectured at several hospitals and schools in the Philadelphia region until the late 1920s, and also made significant contributions to ophthalmological literature.

George Edmund De Schweinitz, Philadelphia ophthalmololgist, was born on 26 Oct. 1858; he died on 22 Aug. 1938.

De Schweinitz received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1881. He was then quiz master in therapeutics at the Medical Institution in Philadelphia and Prosector of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania. As an ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon, De Schweinitz was associated with the Philadelphia General Hospital and Philadelphia Orthopaedic Hospital. He taught ophthalmology at Jefferson Medical College, the Philadelphia Polyclinic and College, and the University of Pennsylvania. He was often consulted by Woodrow Wilson. G. E. De Schweinitz became a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1887 and was its president from 1910 to 1913.
