Edward John Long was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1900. He was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1918, and resigned one year later to attend Columbia University. He later attended Oxford University. On November 16, 1937 he was appointed a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Recalled to active duty on December 2, 1940, he was appointed to head the Photographic Section, holding that post for the next four years, and later had duty with the Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet and as Assistant Curator of the museum at the Naval Academy. He was relieved from active duty on January 15, 1946.
