Biographical notes:

In 1966, the United State Congress passed the National Historic Preservation Act. This act required that each state establish a State Historic Preservation Office to identify, evaluate, register, interpret and protect the state's historic properties. The office provides technical assistance to local communities and administers an incentive program that includes state and federal tax credits. The SHPO works closely with the Office of the State Archaeologist to accomplish its goals. For many years, the SHPO was under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Dept. of State as part of the Bureau of History, and then the Michigan Historical Center. In 2009, the office was transferred to the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

The State Historic Preservation Office was part of the Michigan Historical Center until 2009. The Historical Center (or Bureau of History) was under the jurisdiction of the Department of State for most of the years represented by these files. In 2001, the Michigan Historical Center became part of the Michigan Department of History, Arts, and Libraries (HAL). Because of severe budget cuts, HAL was disestablished, and its divisions were reassigned to other Executive Deparments. The State Historic Preservation Office became part of the State Housing Development Authority.
