Daniel Ullmann was born in Delaware, graduated from Yale College (1829), became a lawyer in New York City in 1830, became active in party politics and was ambitious for elective office in the 1850s. Initially an admirer of Henry Clay's, he was chosen as Whig Pary candidate for Attorney.

General in 1851, and was defeated. Next, in 1854, he was the candidate of the American ("Know-Nothing") Party for Governor of New York State and lost to Myron H. Clark. He was a commissioned officer during the Civil War, active in raising "colored troops" in Louisiana. After the War, he retired from all professional life. He died in 1892.
