Gage, William A.

The 121st Regiment, United States Colored Infantry, was organized at Maysville, Kentucky, on October 8, 1864. The unit served on garrison and guard duty at various points in Kentucky until June, 1865, and was discontinued on June 30, 1865.

William A. Gage was mustered into the 12th Regiment, Ohio Cavalry as a Captain. The 12th Ohio Cavalry was organized at Cleveland, Ohio, and mustered in November 24, 1863. The unit served at Camp Chase, Ohio, until February, 1864, and at Camp Dennison until March. The regiment was ordered to Nashville, Tennessee, on March 31, 1862. It was attached to the 2nd Brigade, 5th Division, 23rd Army Corps, District of Kentucky, until July 1864, and then to the 4th Brigade, 1st Division, District of Kentucky, until February 1865. Finally the regiment served with the 1st Brigade, Cavalry Division, District of East Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to July, 1865 and the Cavalry Brigade, District East Tennessee, until November, 1865. It saw service in Kentucky against John Hunt Morgan's invasion of Kentucky from May 31to June 20, 1864. At some point before October, 1864, Gage was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and became the commanding officer of the 121st Regiment , United States Colored Infantry.
