Cadet, 1855-1860, of United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.; one of several participants who claimed to have been first to fire on Ft. Sumter, 12 April 1865; elected treasurer of Richland County, S.C., 1877; postmaster of Columbia, S.C., 1885-1890; husband of Jane Alan Mason Gibbes; brother of Alexander Mason Gibbes (1877-1921).
