Biographical notes:

From the Malloch Rare Book Room (New York Academy of Medicine) Newsletter (10) Spring 1995 : "The New York Academy of Medicine is pleased to announce the recent donation of the Hoeber papers to Special Collections. This archive, which includes the papers of Paul B. Hoeber, Inc. from its founding in 1901 through the last books published under the imprint as a division of Harper and Brothers, is comprised of publishers' file copies, correspondence and photographs. At the age of 18, Paul B. Hoeber, the son of German immigrants with a long family tradition of medicine, inherited from his uncle, a dealer in medical textbooks, his entire stock as well as all his business obligations. He started a medical bookstore on East 59th Street and began publishing texts under his own imprint. The diversity and scope of Hoeber's titles documented his intelligence, originality and taste. They include groundbreaking medical monographs, notable works of medical history and biography, and several leading periodicals, among them The American Journal of Surgery and The Annals of Medical History. By 1926, Paul B. Hoeber, Inc. had become one of the leading medical book centers in the country. Hoeber moved his offices to lower Fifth Avenue and ceased bookselling to concentrate entirely on publishing. In 1936 the firm became a wholly owned subsidiary of Harper and Brothers, but maintained its autonomy under Hoeber's control. Upon his death in 1937, his son Paul B. Hoeber, Jr. at the age of 23 took over for his father. The younger Hoeber continued the tradition, devoting his career to running the distinguished imprint as the medical book division of Harpers for more than thirty years. The Academy Library thanks Mrs. Paul B. Hoeber, Jr., for this significant donation and looks forward to making this collection available to scholars in the near future. Please watch for an announcement of an upcoming exhibition of highlights of the Hoeber Collection".
