Rev. John Flynn joined the Home Missions staff of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria in 1902. The activities of the Australian Inland Mission in the Northern Territory and adjacent sparsley populated areas were initiated and directed by Flynn for 39 years. In 1928 he founded the Aerial Medical Service (Flying Doctor Service).

Rev. John Flynn's major interests lay with the needs of the people of the outback. He was until his death superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission, which was established as a result of his report to the Presbyterian Church of Australia in 1912. He also founded the Flying Doctor Service.
