William Agustus Ayres was born in Illinois on April 19, 1867. He moved with his parents to Sedgwick County, Kansas, in 1881. He attended Garfield University (now Friends University) in Wichita, Kansas and was admitted to the bar in 1893. He practiced law in Wichita and was clerk of the Court of Appeals of Kansas from 1897-1901.
Ayres served as the Prosecuting Attorney of Sedgwick County from 1906-1910. He was elected as a Democrat to the 64th, 65th, 66th, 68th, 69th, 70th, 71st, and 72nd Congresses. He resigned from Congress effective August 22, 1934, having been appointed a member of the Federal Trade Commission on June 30, 1934. He served in this capacity until his death on February 17, 1952.
