William Carey Dowd (1835-1860) was born in Tarboro, N.C., the son of prominent North Carolina Baptist minister the Reverend Patrick Dowd (1799-1866). William Carey Dowd graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1858 and became a tutor in Latin until his health caused his resignation in winter of 1858. Dowd went to Florida for his health, and in summer of 1859 he travelled to Red Sulphur Springs, Va., seeking treatment for tuberculosis. Dowd's health failed to improve, and he died in Christiansburg, Va., en route home from Red Sulphur Springs to Tarboro.
