Biographical notes:

James Brydges (1673-1744): British statesman and patron of arts. In addition to the Canons, the fabulous mansion in Stanmore, Middlesex, the Duke owned an estate at Avington in Hampshire, and estates in Somerset Cheshire, Heresfordshire, and Randorshire. Following his death, the Canons was sold, and the family took up residence at Avington. His son Henry Brydges inherited the title and estates. The 3rd Duke of Chandos, James Brydges (1732-1789), was a prominent Whig politician and courtier.
