Biographical notes:

Journalist, artist, nineteenth century author, government agent. First came to California to report on Constitutional Convention (1849). Became confidential agent for U.S. Treasury Department, surveying customs houses, mints, land offices and Indian Office for irregularities. Considered to be one of the most versatile writers of his time. Its is said he influenced the work of Mark Twain.
