Bakewell, Theron Hervey, 1800-1890.

Dates:
Birth 1800
Death 1890

Biographical notes:

The Bakewell family emigrated from England to western Virginia in the early 1800s, settling in Wellsburg, Brooke County. Samuel Roscoe Bakewell was a brickmaker by trade. In 1815 he was forced to abandon his family to avoid his creditors. For approximately seven years he and his son Theron travelled the deep South in search of fame and fortune. Theron eventually returned home and Samuel returned to England, where he died. In 1841 Theron married Mary Bell (Martin) Tomlinson. He apparently tried his hand at keeping a store boat on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers but by 1850 was back at home running a farm. He was taken as a political prisoner during the Civil War and held for a time at Camp Chase, Ohio. Other persons represented in the collection include Theron's sister, Selina Huntington (Bakewell) Campbell, second wife of Disciples of Christ founder Alexander Campbell; brother, Horatio N. Bakewell; wife, Mary Bell (Martin) Tomlinson Bakewell; step-daughter, Virginia Elizabeth Tomlinson; and other members of the Bakewell, Campbell, Martin and Tomlinson families.
