Biographical notes:
William T. Martin, Confederate soldier, was born circa 1842, lived in Pickens County, South Carolina, and died August 5, 1862, in a hospital near Richmond, Virginia. He was a member of Orr's 1st South Carolina Regiment of Rifles and left Camp Pickens for Sullivan's Island, South Carolina (September 1861) where his regiment helped build the gunboat Palmetto State. He went to Virginia and was engaged in the Seven Days' Battles (July 1862) before he became ill and died at Chickahominy Hospital near Richmond. His father, Oliver Martin (b. 1817), was in service January 1864, in Barnett's 2nd Battalion of the South Carolina Reserves.
