Louis S. Rothschild was born on March 29, 1900 in Leavenworth, Kansas. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1918 to 1919, and when he returned from the war, he received a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1920. He married Emily Bettman in 1929. From 1920 to 1955 he was employed at Rothschild and Sons, Inc., including positions of secretary, vice-president, and president. From 1953 to 1959 he served as Chairman of the Board of Inland Waterways Corporation. In 1953 he was the U.S. delegate to NATO Planning Board for Ocean Shipping. He served as Chairman, Federal Maritime Board and Administrator of the Maritime Administration, 1953 to 1955; Under Secretary of Commerce for Transportation, 1955 to 1958; Member, Commission on Government Security, 1955 to 1957; Chairman, Air Coordinating Committee, 1955 to 1958; President, Director, Transportation Equities Corporation, 1958 to 1961 and 1965; and President and Director, International Credit Corp., 1962 to 1965. He died on September 1, 1984.
