Biographical notes:

The East Asian Research Center, growing out of two research programs started in 1955, was established in 1957 under the name Center for East Asian Studies. The Center seeks to assist studies of China, Japan, Korea and adjacent countries such as Vietnam, all considered as parts of the ancient Chinese culture area. In 1977 the name was changed to Fairbank Center for East Asian Research.
