Max William Gardner was the author of several works on agricultural pathology, mainly focusing on fruit diseases in California and Indiana. He was born in Lansing, Michigan, in 1890 and received a forestry degree from Michigan State University in 1912. After earning his PhD in 1918, Gardner taught botany at the University of Michigan, Purdue University, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis, where he served as chairman of the Department of Plant Pathology. Gardner died on October 31, 1979.
