Missionary and Congregational minister. Came to Australia with the London Missionary Society and incurred the displeasure of Rev. Samuel Marsden with his alleged extravagance at his Aboriginal Mission station Bahtahbah, where he instructed the Aborigines in simple agriculture. Threlkeld's published language studies are now regarded as landmarks in Aboriginal studies. His principal publication "An Australian grammar ... of the language, as spoken by the Aborigines ... of Hunter's River" was published in 1934.
