Ophthalmologist Harvey J. Howard received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1908. His career included two long appointments in China - from 1910-15 he served as head of the Ophthalmology Department at the University Medical School, Canton Christian College, and from 1917-27 he served as head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Peking Union Medical College. In 1927 Howard returned to the United States to become the first chair of the new Department of Ophthalmology at the Washington University School of Medicine, a position he held until 1934 when he entered private practice.
