Henry Martyn Hoyt was a lieutenant colonel of the 52nd Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was captured at Fort Johnson, S.C., but a prisoner exchange allowed him to return to the 52nd until the end of the Civil War, when he was brevetted brigadier general. He became the governor of Pennsylvania and served in that office from 1878 to 1883.
