Biographical notes:

William Appleman Williams, an American historian, was known as the father of the "revisionist school" of American diplomatic history. Born in Atlantic, Iowa in 1921, he attended the United States Naval Academy and spent fifteen months as a naval officer in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he enrolled in the history department at the University of Wisconsin and received his doctorate in 1950. He taught at several schools before joining the faculty of the University of Wisconsin in 1957. He published his most important works, including The tragedy of American diplomacy and The contours of history while teaching at the University of Wisconsin. In 1968 Williams became a member of the history faculty at Oregon State University and in 1980 he was elected president of the Organization of American Historians. William Appleman Williams died in Waldport, Oregon in 1990.
