The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance, an independent regulatory agency, was created in 1967 when the former Insurance Department (WIHV85-A110) was renamed.
The Office is responsible for supervision of the insurance industry operating in Wisconsin and for the administration of the various statutes and administrative rules which regulate the insurance industry. In fulfilling its regulatory functions, the Office conducts financial and market conduct exams, licenses agents, reviews rates and forms, investigates consumer complaints, and provides consumer education. The Office also operates the State Life Fund, the State Insurance Fund, the State Indemnity Fund, and the Patients Compensation Fund.
