Emery Roth was an architect specializing in apartment house design. Born in Czechoslovakia and orphaned at the age of 13, he came to the United States to live with an uncle in Chicago, Ill. Roth was educated in Chicago, but served his architectural apprenticeship in Bloomington, Ill. At the age of 18, he became a draftsman in Kansas City, Mo. Roth next worked for Burnham & Root in Chicago from 1890 to 1893. From 1893 to 1898, he was employed in the New York City office of Richard M. Hunt. Early in the 20th century, Roth established his own firm, which in 1938 became known as Emery Roth and Sons. Although he designed a variety of types of buildings, Roth's major works were Manhattan apartment buildings.
