Biographical notes:

Francis Morse Dent was born in Rome, Georgia on Feb. 19, 1894, the son of Thomas Marshal Dent and Ella M. (Daniels). Both parents were college graduates. His father was one of the first graduates of Atlanta University in 1800 and finished Howard University Law School in 1884. His mother was a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Francis M. Dent's education included a high school diploma from M Street High School, Washington DC and a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1916. He moved to Detroit in 1919 and graduated from Detroit College of Law in 1923, the same year he was admitted to the Michigan Bar. During World War I, Mr. Dent served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, 368th Infantry, with the American Expeditionary Forces. He and his first wife, Grace, had one daughter, Grace Frances. They divorced in 1950. He and Clottee Y. Macklie married in 1951. Mr. Dent was active in numerous organizations, most particularly Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, in which he had a life membership. He was a recipient of the prestigious Award of Merit. Mr. Dent ran as a candidate for the Michigan State Senate from the 3rd District in 1930. He died on Dec. 4, 1964.
