Historian Janet Wilson James was educated at Smith (A.B. 1939), Bryn Mawr (M.A. 1940) and Radcliffe (Ph.D. 1954). She taught at Mills and Wellesley, was an editor of Notable American Women, 1607-1950, was director of the Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe College, (1965-1969) and professor of history at Boston College from 1971 until her death. She died in Cambridge, Mass., in 1987.
