Paul Lewis Anderson was born October 8, 1880, in Trenton, New Jersey. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1901 with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1910, he terminated his engineering career and opened a portrait studio in East Orange, New Jersey. In 1914, his first book, Pictorial landscape-photography, was published and he began teaching at the Clarence H. White School of Photography. Between 1925 and 1935, he wrote five young adult novels that take place during ancient Roman times. Between 1933 and 1944, he was a regular contributor to American photography and The camera, publishing articles defending pictorialism. He died on September 16, 1956 in Short Hills, New Jersey.
