George Matsumoto, former Professor of Architecture at North Carolina State University (1957-1961) and prominent San Francisco, California architect (1961-1991) was born in San Francisco on July 16th, 1922. His educational background and professional career focused on architecture beginning in 1943 with a Bachelor of Art, Architecture, from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. He earned a Master of Art with honors, in 1945, from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, studying under Eliel Saarinen. Upon graduation, Matsumoto became Senior Designer at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in Chicago, Illinois, and Senior Planner-Designer the following year at Saarinen and Swanson, Birmingham, Michigan. In 1947 he was a principal architect in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as an instructor in architecture at the University of Oklahoma. In 1948, Matsumoto was appointed Assistant Professor of Architecture. He became an Associate Professor in 1951 and by 1957 had the title of professor. From 1961-1967, he continued his teaching career, Professor, College of Design at the University of California. At the same time, Matsumoto and Associates' award-winning designs are known on both coasts, having had commercial and residential successes that include projects in California, North Carolina, Florida, New York, and Virginia. Some of these designs are worth noting: the Bechtel Engineering Center at Berkeley; several North Carolina residences: Poole Lake House; Julian Residence; and the Thrower Residence. Impressive photographs by Joseph Moliter and Matsumoto's drawings and sketches depict the architect's fine reputation and talents.
