Biographical notes:

Founded in 1904; successor of the International Metallurgists' Bureau of Information, formed in 1893 by trade unions from six European countries aiming at the eight-hour working day; after the Second World War it resisted the intentions of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) to absorb the International Trade Secretariats (ITS); founding member of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) in 1949; by far the largest ITS of the ICFTU; its policy concentrates on international cooperation to improve wages and working conditions, on the role of the multinational corporations and on assistance programmes for trade unions in the Third World; its seat is in Geneva; it has regional organizations in Latin America, East Asia, West Asia and Africa; periodical: IMF News (weekly).
