Frederick Immanuel Neuhaus came to the United States in 1848 to become a missionary for the American Society for Meliorating the Condition of the Jews. The Ladies' Jews' Society contributed all the funds to bring Neuhaus to Philadelphia. From 1843 to 1848 he had been a missionary for the Free Church of Scotland to the Jews in Pesth and Constantinople. In 1850, Neuhaus became a missionary to the Jews for the Board of Foreign Missions in Baltimore. In 1855, the Board asked Neuhaus to discontinue his work in Baltimore by May 1856. He moved to Cincinnati and died there in 1864.
