Biographical notes:

Alexandre DeClouet, a sugar planter, Confederate congressman, and state senator from St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, was married to Jane Marie Roman (b. 1841). Beginning in the 1860s, their son, Paul L. DeClouet, managed the family's Magenta, St. Claire, and Lizima plantations as Alexandre became increasingly involved in various political organizations, including the White League, a semi-military body organized to oppose the development of political and economic power of black freedmen.
