Biographical notes:

Miriam Lowenberg was born 27 July 1897 in Ottumwa, Iowa. Dr. Lowenberg received her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and graduate degrees at Iowa State College and the State University of Iowa. After teaching home economics at several levels, she became assistant professor in foods and nutrition and child development at Iowa State College. During World War II she supervised the daily feeding of over 1,000 children in the Portland, Oregon, shipyards. In 1952, she was appointed professor and head of the Department of Foods and Nutrition at Penn State and held that position until her retirement with the rank of professor emerita in 1963. Lowenberg was in great demand as a speaker at professional meetings and wrote books, bulletins, and numerous articles on the subject of child feeding including a collaboration with Dr. Benjamin Spock titled, Feeding your Baby and Child. Miriam Lowenberg died in Seattle on 27 September 1995 at the age of 98.
