Brooklyn Art Association.
Biographical notes:
The Brooklyn Art Association was founded by a group of artists and lay persons in 1861 as the successor of the Brooklyn Art Social. A formal constitution was adopted in November 1862. The organization incorporated in 1864, selling shares to finance the erection of a building, which opened in 1872. In 1891, the Association consolidated with the Dept. of Painting of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts & Sciences to operate the Brooklyn Art School. The Institute gradually acquired all Brooklyn Art Association stock and the corporation was dissolved in 1923.
