Ornithologist and educator Brina Kessel was born in Ithaca, New York, in 1925. She received her Ph.D. in ornithology from Cornell University in 1951 and in the summer of that year began her teaching career at the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines (now University of Alaska Fairbanks). Though best known for her scholarly work on birds and birding in Alaska, she also served in various administrative capacities at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and as curator of terrestrial vertebrate collections (1972-1990) and the ornithology collection (1990-1995) at the University of Alaska Museum.
