Biographical notes:

Graduate education has been offered at the University of Minnesota since 1875, cumulating in the first Master's Degree being awarded in 1882 to Robert Henry Crafts, and the first Ph.D. in 1888 to Charles Burke Elliott. In 1885, the graduate department was organized within the College of Science, Literature and the Arts and on December 12, 1905, the Board of Regents established the Graduate School as an autonomous unit at the University. The following faculty have served as dean of the Graduate School: Henry T. Eddy (1905-1912), Guy Stanton Ford (1913-1938), Theodore C. Blegen (1940-1960), Bryce Crawford (1960-1971), May Brodbeck (1972-1974) and Warren Ibele (1975-1983).
