University of Hawaii (System). Office of the Chancellor for Community Colleges.

Dates:
Active 1963
Active 2003

Biographical notes:

The chief administrator of the community colleges of the University of Hawaii System has carried different titles over the years. Near the beginning of the merger of the former technical colleges into the university system, in December 1964, the Board of Regents established the title as Assistant to the President for Community Colleges. On 1 July 1965, the title changed to Vice President for Community Colleges. In May 1973, the vice president at the time resigned; in January 1974, the BOR minutes suggest that the position would remain vacant for the current time, with the individual provosts of the community colleges reporting directly to the president. On 16 January 1975, the BOR approved reorganizational changes that made the supervising officer over the community colleges, Chancellor for Community Colleges. This title seems to have continued until January 2003 when the BOR altered the title to Senior Vice President and Chancellor for Community Colleges. Further change occurred within two months. Although the BOR minutes do not specify when changes occurred, the minutes for the April 2003 meeting list the incumbent vice president and chancellor with a new title in charge of international education. The same minutes list the former provosts of various community colleges as chancellors. The title of Vice President for Community Colleges remains in effect (2009).
