E. Hoffmann Price was born in California, educated at the US Military Academy, and served in World War I in the US Cavalry. He turned to full time writing in the 1930s and was a prolific writer of pulp fiction including adventure, western, and weird fiction. He was friends with many writers of the great pulp magazine fiction era, including H. P. Lovecraft and August Derleth. Price died in 1988.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born in his family home in Providence, R.I. in 1890. He was a precocious child, reading and writing before he was of school age. He had a troubled childhood and never graduated from high school. He began writing fiction in 1917 and engaged in prolific letter-writing throughout his life. He died from cancer in 1937.
