Charles Edgar Erdmann was born September 22, 1897, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Charles and Caroline Erdmann. He served in the Marine Corps in France during World War I. Erdmann received both a bachellor's and master's degree from the University of Minnesota. He received a doctorate from Yale University in 1926. He began his work with the United States Geological Service in 1924, doing field work throughout the western United States. He moved to Great Falls in 1944 as regional geologist in the mineral classification branch of the Conservation Division. He specialized in the evaluation of mineral fuels. His work in this field earned him a Distinguished Service Award in 1959. He also did evaluations for potential dam sites.
