East High School (Denver, Colo.)
Variant namesBiographical notes:
When the Arapahoe School opened in Denver, Colo. 1873, it served school district no. 1 as both high school and grade school. By 1875 there was a separate high school section in the school (with its own principal) called Denver High School. It remained in the Arapahoe Street building until 1881 when relocated to a Stout Street annex. In 1889 there was a separate building at 19th and Stout for the high school. One wing of this building contained a public library maintained by the school district for about ten years. John Cotton Dana was librarian. The school was variously called East Denver High School, East Side High School, or Denver High School, East Side. In 1925 a new building was opened on Detroit Street near City Park and the old building demolished.
