Biographical notes:

Arthur William Vanaman (b. May 9, 1892, Millville, N.J.-d. Sept. 14, 1987), Major General in the U.S. Air Force, was commissioned in the Signal Corps in 1917 after graduating from college. He served as air attaché in Berlin from 1937 to 1941, then commanded the Army Air Force Materiel Center and Air Service Commands in Oklahoma and Texas. He was assistant chief of staff for operations for the 8th Air Force when he was taken prisoner in Germany. After his release, he served as deputy chief of staff for prisoner of war affairs with U.S. Strategic Air Forces and commanding general, Mobile Air Technical Service Command. He retired in May 1954.
