Charles H. Martin was a United States (U.S.) Army officer and government official from Oregon. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, in the Class of 1887 and was a 1st lieutenant with the 14th Infantry Regiment (1898). Martin saw service in the Philippines and with the China Relief Expedition (1899-1901). He became captain (1903) and was Chief Quartermaster (QM) with Department (Dept.) of Visayes in the Philippines (1905). Martin was transferred to Vancouver Barracks (1908) and participated in the Mexican border troubles (1916). After becoming a colonel (1917), he saw action in France with the 86th and 92nd Divisions during WWI. He was next assigned to the Adjutant General's (AG) Dept. (1920-1921), and was promoted to brigadier general (1921), and major general (1925). Martin headed the Panama Canal Dept. (1925-1928). He retired from the military in 1927. During his political career, he was elected to U.S. House from Oregon (1930-1934) and became governor of Oregon (1935-1939). Martin died in 1946.
