Captain S. W. Steele was a Confederate engineer who served under General Braxton Bragg during the first two years of the Civil War. In 1863 he was transferred to serve under the command of Major General Joseph Wheeler where he remained until the end of the war. Under Wheeler he participated in raids throughout Ga. and Tenn. and saw action at Chickamauga, Knoxville, Missionary Ridge, Ringgold (Ga.), Dalton (Ga.), Resaca (Ga.), and Bentonville (N. C.).
