William E. Osgood was born in N.H. in 1926. He had completed four years of high school and was working as a professional driver when he was inducted into the Army in 1944 at Ft. Devens, Mass. Osgood volunteered for the ski troops through the National Ski Patrol System. He was stationed at Camp Swift, Tex. and in Italy where he was assigned to the 87th Infantry Regiment, Company C. Following the war, Osgood received a M.S. in Library Science. He has worked with arctic explorer Wihjalmur Stefanson at Dartmouth College and is the author and co-author of several books and articles on skiing and snowshoeing.
